Paying tuition by pre-authorized debit
Adding your Canadian bank account, what you agree to, when the money comes out, and how to remove it.
What it is
Pre-authorized debit (PAD) lets you pay tuition straight from a Canadian bank account. You set it up once, and your centre's invoices are then debited from your account when they're due.
Before you start
- It's offered by centres in Canada that take tuition through RoundUp. If you don't see the option below, your centre doesn't offer it. Pay by card instead, or ask your centre.
- You'll need your Canadian bank account details for Stripe's page.
Adding it in the app
- Open Payments Tap the Settings tab.
- Tap Add Canadian Bank Account Stripe's secure page opens.
- Enter and confirm your account Enter your bank account, let Stripe verify it, and accept the pre-authorized debit agreement.
- Come back to the app Your account appears under your payment methods as Canadian bank account (pre-authorized debit) once Stripe has confirmed it.
Adding a bank account in the app makes it your default payment method and turns autopay on once it's confirmed. You'll get a Bank account ready notification.
Adding it on the web
- Open Payment methods Sign in to the family portal and open Payment methods.
- Click Add a Canadian bank account Stripe's secure page opens.
- Enter and confirm your account Enter your bank account, let Stripe verify it, and accept the agreement.
Back on the portal you'll see: Thanks — your bank account is being verified. It appears here once Stripe confirms it, which can take a few business days if Stripe sends small test deposits. Once it appears it's your default payment method. Autopay stays as you had it; use Turn autopay on if you want invoices paid automatically.
You enter your bank details on Stripe's page, never in RoundUp.
If you see Pre-authorized debit is still being enabled for this centre's payment account. Please try again later, or pay by card for now., your centre's payments account isn't ready for bank debits yet. Nothing was saved. Try again later.
What you agree to
On Stripe's page you accept a pre-authorized debit agreement with your centre. Its wording is set by Payments Canada's rules. It allows a debit When a tuition or fee invoice from your centre becomes due. Stripe emails you a confirmation of the agreement; keep it.
When you're debited
With autopay on, your account is debited when each invoice is due. A debit takes up to five business days to clear. Until then the invoice shows Payment pending and isn't marked paid yet. There's no need to pay it again, and autopay won't debit the same invoice again while the first debit is clearing.
To pay an invoice yourself, use Pay now as usual. See Paying tuition and Autopay and saved cards.
If a debit doesn't go through
Your bank can return a debit, for example if there isn't enough in the account. You'll get a Bank payment didn't go through notification, and the invoice is unpaid again. Check your account or pay another way. A returned-payment fee may be added to your next invoice. If you're not sure why it was returned, ask your bank, and tell your centre.
Removing your bank account
Removing the account ends the pre-authorized debit agreement, so nothing more is debited from it.
- In the app: Payments → Settings, then Remove under the bank account.
- On the web: Payment methods, then Remove and Yes, remove it.
If it was your default payment method, autopay is switched off. Tuition is still owed, so add another payment method or pay each invoice with Pay now.
If you cancel the agreement through your bank instead, RoundUp stops debiting the account, switches autopay off if it was using it, and sends you a Pre-authorized debit cancelled notification. Your centre is told too.
